The following are the transcribed notes, pictures, and videos I took during the bus ride. Started off recording ALL events then just occasionally jotted down my position...
NOTES:
- First one on the bus...
- 1st stop 2 people came in
- Familiar part of town - nice and clean - nothing new/special.
- MUSIC - Zero 7 - End Theme
- Glad to back in NYC - everything “works” here...
- See all kinds of people - grumpy people, happy people - its all good - having a good time on their Saturday - wonder what each one's story is. They are also probably looking at me with my iPod on, pencil and paper on my lap, camera, flip-flops, looking around and taking pictures, wondering what kind of tourist I am...
- MUSIC - Sheryl Crow - A Change Would do You Good
- Hum... I am sitting on Priority Seats to get the window spot - well - still some seats left but might need to move if some more elderly people come in on the bus.
- 13th to 17th St - a lot more commercial area - more dirty - more construction work - feels more crowded...
- MUSIC - Jacob Dylan - One Headlight
- 21st St - already less cluttered. All kinds of people - stereotypes every where - all minding their own business - but inside judging everyone else probably - just natural - thinking they are the normal ones.
- How embarrassing - while taking an “undercover” photo of the people inside the bus, the flash goes off! Pretended I did not know how to operate the camera and discretely turned the flash off...
- Pity the GPS idea did not work...
- 30th St - even more commercial - but all the weekday commerce seems to be closed - well - some of them - as opposed to downtown - everything open...
- MUSIC - Wynonna Judd - Attitude
- 30th St & Broadway - used to pass by here all the time when going with my bike to Central Park... it was the halfway milestone...
- MUSIC - B-Tribe - The Sun
- LOVE this song!
- Bus pilling up.
- Avenue got even wider now... starting to get more “upscale” - some nice hotels popping up.
- Observing this loud woman on her cell phone in front of me reminded me of the Jitney's (bus to the Hamptons) cell phone policy - no cell phones! Maybe there should be an iPod policy... but cell phones are worse since you actually are emitting sounds to the environment.
- More construction on 42nd St..
- Cool! Harleys in NYC!
- MUSIC - Black Total
- Nah - change song - too mellow
- MUSIC - Bud Powell Trio - Night in Tunisia
- 45th St. - now very upscale - limos everywhere and hotels
- Bus driver going crazy - switching lanes right and left - pissing some cab drivers off...
- 80 degrees outside!!
- MUSIC - Madonna - Crazy for You
- The old mixed with the new - Radio City Music Hall with “old' fonts across the street from the Time & Life building and other modern sky scrapers.
- Funny marathon runner just went by
- Rollerblader - not as many as there used to be 10 years ago
- 55th St. - still upscale but many more shops around
- Handicapped guy going down the bus on 57th St... an example of how everything works here...
- MUSIC - Peter Gabriel - Signal to Noise
- Hum... don't like this song too much... first reaction is to change - let's give it a chance... no... first impressions seem to be always right - let's change the music
- MUSIC - US3 - Tukka Yoot's Riddim
- The PARK! Can't wait to go biking this afternoon.
- MUSIC - Joe Cocker - You can leave your hat on
- Hum... the M5 bus route is almost exactly the same route to my bike rides on Thursdays for races around Grant's Toomb's Park
- 57th St - soooo many people with iPods - or at least headphones
- Upscale ladies coming on the bus - the typical “uptown” stereotype
- The Park - so cool - NYC's beach
- Cute kid sitting in front of me - dorky father though - mother pregnant again
- MUSIC - Deepak Chopra - Desire (Featuring Demi Moore)
- What a CHEESY song!! Hum... let's check it out a little
- Looking at these apartments uptown and the closeness to the park started me thinking about looking for an apartment uptown instead - larger and cheaper - let's see...
- All more residential now
- Wonder if foreigners could pick up all the subtleties of the neighborhoods and all... as IF I was a national... but all differences are pretty obvious...
- Idea - Reality show on the bus - similar to cameras inside race cars with info - widgets. Will have to simulate all of this.
- Hum... cannot leave the camera rolling on the bus... will get that footage on the bike.
- Forgot to use the heart rate monitor on the bus - oh well - would be boring to watch anyway - would be pretty stable throughout the ride - unless there was an accident or some hot girl... hehehe... have to buy duck tape to attach the camera to the bike.
- 71st St - nice buildings!
- 72nd St subway entrance - remember giving tips to a guy on crutches on how to use them
- MUSIC - Sam & Dave - Soul Man
- Bus emptied out a little now... oh no... more people coming in!
- MUSIC - The Fugees - Uh La La La
- Funny to see people doing Yoga right near the windows of a busy street. New York - everyone minding their own business and doing their thing. All about life choices: "I'm a vegan" "I'm a clubber" "I'm a biker” and so on...
- River Side Drive - so nice - so many different areas to live in - move some blocks and your life style could change I guess or at least your NY experience... Guess it is like that in any city but here it is so diverse in terms of the services you have in each neighborhood. In São Paulo you always have your “padarias” (bakery) “Pão de Açucar” (groceries) “feira” (fair) and they all look and feel the same... Here it seems like there is more variety.
- MUSIC - Pearl Jam - The Garden
- The man sittting on my left looks like George's (Seinfeld) father!!
- Wow - so beautiful here - Hudson River
- My friend Inson lives around here - maybe too far from school for me to live... maybe with kids this would be a good place to live in... for now I really want to be close to campus.
- Filming myself now...
- Bikers! Close to Grants Toomb now - would be cool to live here but very quiet - not too much commerce here
- A Bernaise!! (huge dog breed)! Frida! (my dog - Border Collie) Miss her - but would be impossible to have a dog now
- Would definitely need a car to live up here...
- So many bikers - for sure coming back from a century (100 miles) ride up to Bear Mountain...
- MUSIC - New Order - Perfect Kiss
- Some more “homeless” people on the bus...
- MUSIC - Fairground Attraction - The Moon is Mine
- Great song and voice!!
- HA!!! Grant's Toomb's Park!
- MUSIC - Vivaldi - Summer II, Addagio
- 130th St - low rise buildings - lower income commerce
- Out of River Side Drive - into town - people get in on the bus
- HA! Preconceptions can really fool you - thought the man in blue was begging for money to pay for his fare before but he was actually asking people for change for a $1 bill... ooops... I guees I had my earphones on and did not hear him asking...
- 142nd St - Ride almost reaching the George Washington Bridge...
- Funny - something about this particular stretch of street reminded me of São Paulo... deja vu...
- MUSIC - Classics - Addagio 2
- Incredible how music changes the scenery... well, sometimes the music simply does not fit... like right now... let's see what comes up next.
- MUSIC - Red Soul & Red Slam - It's Alright
- 155th St - beautiful building and little street fair...
- American culture has something about self/spontaneous organization (as opposed to government or large entity promoted organizations) In Brazil I get the feeling that people just want someone telling them what to do - if something is not right or if something is needed, they don't usually group some friends and do something about it - they expect someone else of the government should do something about it.
- Hum... see almost no yellow cabs here... and a lot more latin and african americans here... hum... also higher frequency of over weight people... and more elder...
- Very nice Children's Hospital with American Flag... start to see these more around here... very few downtown.
- MUSIC - Credence Clearwater Revival - Who'll Stop the Rain
- A lot more Spanish commerce...
- Going to be a great a bike ride
- MUSIC - Caetano Veloso - get out of town
- Video Camera battery ended... Just in time
- END of the ride!!
